Head of Public Affairs

Job description

OpenCorporates is the largest open database of companies and company data in the world, with in excess of 160 million companies from over 130 jurisdictions. Our primary goal is to make information on companies more usable and more widely available for public benefit, particularly to tackle the use of companies for criminal or anti-social purposes, for example corruption, money laundering and organised crime.

As a social enterprise, we are unique in this space, not just by advocating for a better, fairer, more transparent world, but also providing the tools and data to achieve that. We have led the world in making open company data a norm, and are an essential resource for journalists, anti-corruption investigators, law enforcement, and the wider business community.

Our innovative public-benefit structure, overseen by the OpenCorporates Trust, means that we will always be for the public benefit and always be independent, and our virtuous circle business model means that we have a sustainable income from corporate users that drives public benefit use, which in turn provides a powerful data quality feedback mechanism. We are neither an NGO, nor a traditional company – but combine the mission of the former with the ambition and focus of the latter.

OpenCorporates has achieved a lot with tiny resources, successfully running and managing campaigns for open data on companies, including beneficial ownership, with great arguments, deep expertise, a lot of passion,  and not much else. We’ve also built a community of users, supporters and partners – journalists, NGOs, but also governments and business – who use depend on our data and are strongly behind our mission.

Now we are looking for an experienced Head of Public Affairs to take this success to the next level – to make company open data and Total Corporate Transparency the norm and grow our community of supporters and public-benefit users. This will involve:

  • Running successful campaigns and lobbying operations

  • Strengthening our relationships with governments around the world, and with key intergovernmental bodies (EC, OECD, FATF, World Bank, etc)

  • Building an evidence base for the importance and utility of open company data

  • Pulling together our patchwork of users and stakeholders into a strong coherent force supporting and cheerleading for OpenCorporates and our important mission.

You’ll be joining a passionate, talented and friendly team based in our great new office in Shoreditch, London.
